Die QUEER KAROKE PARTY im SO36 zeigt am 11.02.04 neu gedrehte Karaoke-Videos, die hoffentlich nicht nur die Phantasie der schwul-lesbischen Fangemeinde anregen, sondern sie auch den richtigen Ton treffen lassen werden. RegisseurInnen aus Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam und Vancouver haben Community-kompatible Karaoke-Videos geschaffen, die es einer/einem schwer machen, auf die Textzeilen am unteren Bildrand zu achten. (…) Die Idee zu den Videos und der Queer Karaoke Party kam vom kanadischen Videokünstler Wayne Yung, der diese im Rahmen der Lesbisch-Schwulen Filmtage Hamburg 2003 organisierte.

The QUEER KARAOKE PARTY screens new videos on 11 February 2004 at SO36, striking the right note by depicting the fantasies of gay and lesbian music fans. Directors from Berln, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Vancouver have made community-compatible karaoke videos, which make it hard to pay attention to the text on the bottom of the screen. (…) This video and party concept was originally launched by Canadian video artist Wayne Yung, who organised it for the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of Hamburg in 2003.

The Queer Karaoke Project is a series of karaoke parties consisting of queer karaoke videos that have taken Europe by storm appearing in Hamburg, Berlin and now Amsterdam. The objective of the parties are to catalyze both local queer videomakers and community support.

Selbst beim Mitsingen des Karaokeefilms 'Girl von Ipanema' lässt sich also im Sinne Vilém Flussers gewahr werden, dass einerseits eigene unabhängige Medienproduktionen ein Mittel der Selbstbestimmung in der Mediengesellschaft sind, dass andererseits jedoch die projektierte "Wahrheit" nur eine Projektion der Medien bleibt. Oder anders ausgedrückt, wenn nach Marshall Mc Luhan das Medium die Massage ist, darf man sich nicht wundern, wenn bei Brynntrup einiges gegen den Strich geknetet wird und es an empfindlichen Stellen sehr zwicken kann.

Even while singing along with the karaoke of “Girl of Ipanema”, one must remember that independent media production is always both informational self-determination and pure self-projection inside the media, as it was seen by Vilém Flusser. “Truth” thus may only be a projection. Or, saying it differently, if according to Marshall McLuhan, “The Medium is the Massage” (one of his late books), we shall not wonder if Brynntrup is kneading us against the grain, and that it might pinch hard at some very sensitive parts.
